Why not just use this: π?

HTML has support for it, so why use fonts and everything?

Because that renders in a serif font for me (and most likely other viewers), which does not make it look like ip. For me, that renders as a rectangle with no bottom edge. I had to look at it for a while on the Radians page before I realized it wasn't an n.

But that is the letter pi. There are many ways to represent it, and that appearance is one of them. I think we should let MediaWiki decide what font to render stuff in, not force it to show in a certain font. And, anyways, it won't show like this for every reader. For example, on Firefox, for me, it shows as the other one (I had to actually change the font to understand what you mean), but that's probably because I edited my default fonts in the settings.

I agree with NXTBoy here... Pi should actually look like pi and not confuse new users with an 'n'.

Hey, I was just copying the (essence of the) template from Wikipedia. Besides, the serif appearance of pi is the one people recognize. Remember, serif is not a font, but a font family - it'll use the default serif font of the browser.
