This template can be used in place of a literal "{{" when the latter would be interpreted as a syntactic marker.

For example, <nowiki>{{((}}</nowiki> gives "{{".

Suppose you were using the {{tl|EmphasisBox}} template and wanted to use "{{" in it:

<nowiki>{{EmphasisBox|It is not possible to directly use "{{" in a page as it will be interpreted as a syntactical marker.}}</nowiki>

Here is the result you would get, which does not work properly because the "<nowiki>{{</nowiki>" would be interpreted as a syntactical marker:

However, if you use the {{tl|((}} template, then it will display correctly:
